Course Part 1: January 20, 2025
Learning ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs has fascinated people for centuries. Unlike learning a modern, spoken language, ancient Egyptian writing was made up of pictures that indicated sounds and words, but not necessarily what they themselves were picturing. This made hieroglyphs indesipherable until the Rosetta Stone was discovered where a hieroglyphic text was accompanied by the same text in other languages.
Although this course is tailored to beginners without any knowledge of hieroglyphics, we will delve past simple letter-for-letter transliterations (which is not useful in reading ancient Egyptian) and build up a basic vocabulary based on selected relics from ancient Egypt such as steles, coffins and reliefs.
Learning 20% of the hieroglyphs will enable you to read 80% of ancient Egyptian. Focusing on important phrases and formulas used in writing, you will be able to identify key elements in the texts, such as it's purpose, people, kings and gods mentioned and other important phrases that will help you when visiting exhibitions in museums or excavations in Egypt. These texts will also reveal much about ancient Egyptian culture, their gods and beliefs about the afterlife.
Part 1 of the course should be enough to help you determine how intensively you'd like to study the language and lay a good foundation for further progress. It will consist of 6 sessions, ca. 90 minutes each.
Introductory Price: €130
Part 2 will build on the basics you learned and continue to increase your vocabulary, identify common expressions and read texts at an intermediate level. It will consist of 8 sessions, ca. 90 minutes each. A date for Part 2 will be determined after Part 1, according to interest.
Price: €150
When: The next course is planned for January 20, 2025.
Where: Museum of Natural History, Marientorgraben 8, Nuremberg
