Through many centuries, the citizens of Nuremberg have built vaults and corridors into the bright red sandstone below their city. In all those years, the cellars were primarily used for the ripening and storage of beer – mostly the city's famous red beer.

The dungeon prisons are located in the cellar vaults beneath Nuremberg Town Hall and are a unique facility from the Middle Ages in Germany. Since the 14th century, they have been used for pre-trial detention and for the detention of prisoners until sentences are carried out.
